At the Human Milk Institute (HMI), our mission is to transform the approach to lifelong health for all people through human milk. We will pursue our mission through close collaboration with our partners and holding fast to our core values.

We envision a future where human milk is the first and critical foundation for human life and equitable access to better health for the global community.

Transforming the dissemination of knowledge, igniting collaborations, shaping the future trajectory   

One of HMI's three strategic themes is to transform the dissemination of knowledge about human milk and lactation.

Part of that strategic theme is to convene the world's leading experts for knowledge exchange and strategic planning and visioning.

HMI will elevate the current annual symposium into an international event in the human milk sphere, providing a premier platform for sharing cutting-edge insights, fostering collaboration, and shaping the future trajectory of human milk research and application.

An international event and experience 

The HMI Symposium started as a one-day event with 191 participants in 2023 (HMI'23) and grew to a two-day event with 235 participants from around the world in 2024 (HMI'24). This year for HMI'25, we anticipate over 300 participants from around the world to join us for a three-day event, one day filled with in-depth workshops and satellite sessions on March 4 followed by two days of the main symposium on March 5 and 6 with keynote addresses, scientific sessions, poster presentations, and ample opportunities to network.

Audience and Speakers

Our audience is an energetic mix of professionals in industry and not-for-profit organizations, researchers, educators and clinicians in academia, trainees at all levels as well as interested members of the community -blended together with our invited speakers and special guests from around the world.

Our invited speakers and special guests are some the world's key opinion leaders and experts from academia, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the World Health Organization (WHO).
