Workshop:

Communicating Lactation Science: Reflexive Engagement and Finding a Path Forward

Overview:

The social and political complexities of science communication are more fraught than ever, particularly for research topics relating to gender and reproduction. Effective public engagement with lactation science requires an understanding of not just message clarity, but media dynamics, public opinion, and so much more. Through active discussion and reflective exercises, workshop participants will have a chance to explore the challenges they experience individual and collectively. Expect to leave with an improved clarity around communication goals, an expanded set of tools for engaging empathetically, and specific opportunities to work together moving forward.

Participants will learn to:

  • Apply sensemaking frameworks to navigate complex science communication challenges in the field of human milk and lactation
  • Develop strategies for engaging diverse stakeholders on sensitive topics
  • Build reflexivity into their science communication practice
  • Create actionable plans for improving research impact and public understanding

This is a two-session workshop with a morning and an afternoon session.
